In the year 2014, we approached KCB and pitched to them the idea that banking app should be more a just transactional platform.

At the time, mobile banking apps were still new in the local market and the uptake was low. Most banks were replicating the USSD experience onto an app, not realizing that a smartphone is a different medium which opens so many possibilities: you can take advantage of the phone camera, location capabilities, address book to create an immersive experience.

In the year 2014, we approached KCB and pitched to them the idea that banking app should be more a just transactional platform.

We proposed to KCB that we build a lifestyle app – a one stop place where both KCB customers and non-customers go to realize their wallet needs. Then the app would not just be a transactional platform; instead, it would pull in the latest business insights and news, stocks from the NSE, forex markets, business/ saving tips. KCB were so jazzed with this concept that they nicknamed the app “Super App” – an app that integrates all their digital platforms into one platform.

KCB contracted us. A project team was quickly formed, and we got to work. First we incorporated all the feedback we had gotten onto the original concept. We agreed on the requirements then worked on paper mock-ups which reflected the requirements. Then came the graphical mock-ups, the prototype and then the development; testing and deployment.

The app was released to the market early 2015 and quickly rose to become the No. 1 app in East and Central Africa. To date, it remains the most downloaded and used banking app and is setting the pace in the banking and payments space with over 1.5M downloads.

The app runs on all the major phone platforms: Android, iOS, Windows and BlackBerry.

Phase 2 of these project involved taking the KCB App to other markets where KCB operates in (Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi).

Next MyKash

In 2017 KCB started the Digital Financial Services unit, which is focussed on the mobile channel.

In line with this, KCB engaged us to revamp their mobile offering.

We revamped and redesigned the app, in line with emerging mobile standards to deliver a masterclass release of the KCB App.

Dubbed KCB MyKash, this new release combines M-PESA, PESALINK and MVISA to allow customers to pay directly to any bank, mobile wallet, Buy Goods merchant, Pay Bill.

It also features a web platform (MyKash Web) for companies and SMEs to receive payments, do reconciliation, reports generation as well as statistical analysis.
